I have been talking about the Sock Monkeys forever it seems like.
I finally have the video out on how to make sock monkeys which are super simple. You just need the time and patience because there is hand sewing involved.
For the supplies you will need:
Socks - preferably knee high socks. These will give you long arms and legs. You can have shorter socks but that just means your arms and legs will be shorter and you can’t wrap short arms and legs up.
Stuffing - easy to get, use a coupon if you have one. And find the dowel in the bag. It will help if you are having problems flipping out the arms, tail and body.
Sewing Machine - You will use this first to sewing the pieces together before cutting them apart.
Needle and thread - Once everything is sewn up and cut out and flipped right side out then you will need to attach the tail, arms, mouth, ears to the body and close the hole at the crotch using needle and thread. Unfortunately, you can’t use a sewing machine for this. It just won’t work. But if you find a way let me know. I would be curious to see how it works.
Eyes - I used buttons in my video, but for younger kids I would use felt circles and sew them on using a blanket stitch or whip stitch. That way you don’t have to worry about buttons falling off or any buttons being swallowed.
I am so glad that I finally got this out. Sock Monkeys are not hard to make at all and you can share the experience with your friends and family. You can get a group together and make them for a lot of charities in your area. The Red Cross takes them as well as fire departments and police departments. These charities will take the dolls and pass them out to the kids in need of comfort. But always double check that they will take them before just showing up. Each area has different rules regarding hand crafted items.
I purchased my socks from the dollar store, but you can purchase your socks from where ever you want. I do recommend that you do not purchase socks with a one way design. You can see that on my monkeys the pictures are all upside down. I didn’t take that into account when I purchased the socks.
They don’t take to much stuffing either. I do use my Joanns coupons when purchasing stuffing though. Makes it so much more affordable.
If you follow my directions in the video you will be alright.
